This type of diet was first innovated during 1930s and is initially intended as a short-term weight loss technique. Since then, it has managed to grow and develop that it now has its own myriad of followers who claim to experience substantial amount of weight loss from using this method.

The main focus of this diet is apparently, grapefruit. What is it exactly about grapefruit that makes this diet successful? According to scientific studies, grapefruit when combined with protein rapidly burns fat and thus leading to loss of weight. Therefore, it is utilized by individuals who want to lose weight quickly. However, there are a few critics who claim that it is not the most effective weight loss method considering that all weight that is lost are water weights and not due to fat elimination. Hence, if the dieter decides to stop using this diet method, then there is a huge chance he or she would put back all the weight that was lost.

For instance, the grapefruit juice must be unsweetened and that any type of food not approved for this diet is not recommended.
